research and planning: poster photoshoot

These photos are for my horror film poster. I plan on doing a lot of editing on these to make them darker and i will also be removing the majority of colour, and the arms around.

research and planning: magazine photo shoot

These pictures are for my horror film magazine. I used white and black face paint to create the face make up effect. I shot many photos with the same model but from different angels and positions, showing the contrast of shadows. The pictures of my models arm is of cuts, this is because the character is from a mental asylum and this shows schizophrenic behaviors. These photos will possibly be a faint overlay over the covers photo.

research and planning: photoshoot planning

This is a 'Whatsapp' message between me and my sister who agreed to be photographed for my film poster and magazine. Here i am sending her photos of the idea i had for the photo shoot, showing the possible angles and parts of the body i would be photographing. I also showed her through this message the makeup i would be using on the second picture of the black tear drop makeup around the eyes.

Research and planning: poster drafts

All of these drafts are initial designs of my horror film poster relating to my trailer called 'The Grim Truth'. Each draft is different using close up shots, and long establishing shots to present the film. The first draft is the one I intend develop on to my actual poster because although it is badly drawn, I think the design would work well when photographed. The idea is to have a female character who will also be on my magazine cover, but the character's identity is unknown on the poster. This is because her face will be hidden behind three hands, one covering her mouth, and two hands covering her eyes. I think this relates well to the films plot because throughout the trailer the identity of the protagonist is unknown. Over the face will be a question mark made up of works relating the the trailer. The slogan for this poster is 'Keep your friends close', which i think works well with relating to the film. Each draft is different and i will using elements of the first two drafts to create my poster.

research and planning: positioning statement ideas

These are initial ideas for my horror magazines positioning statement and masthead.

research and planning: sound research

During our trailer on a few occasions we will be including footsteps, for example when one girl locks another girl into a small room, when she walks away her feet and the stepping sounds are highlighted. Also on other occasions footsteps will be present as a background effect.

This video shows the music on a classic horror film trailer, the beginning i feel could work really well on my own trailer, elements and sounds from this trailer would work well with our genre and plot.

This clip is of the trailer for horror film 'Case 39'. I really like the music used throughout the whole trailer because it starts off quite neutral then as the action kicks in so does the music in a subtle way. The climax is built due to the sound effects and background music. I think this style of trailer music would work well on my own trailer and give it a physiological element.

Research and planning: Location Recces

Research and planning: meeting post

We have decided that for our trailer we are going to work together on cinematography, editing, mise en scene, and sound. We have chosen to do this because we thought the trailer would benefit from both of our ideas for each element.

research and planning: trailer script

Trailer script:
Girl 1 (new girl): Orla

Girl 3 (follower): Lily
Girl 4 (tomboy): Sophie

shots 3-5:

shot 12: Orla and Lily
Orla: "iv just gotta grab something"
(lily is locked in)
Lily: "let me out"

shots 19-22 Doctor in asylum
mysterious girl: "no no no no" panicking

Mysterious girl: screaming, pleading

Throughout the trailer there isn't much dialogue, and the large amount being casual conversation between friends, but in the majority being screams and frantic outbursts.

research and planning: shot list's for trailer

These images are of shot lists for my trailer. Looking at the shot numbers it looks mixed up, the main location will be shot inside the college, then there is 4 shots in a girls bedroom, then back in college. the college shots feature throughout and inbetween certain shots include distorted falsh backs or a mental asylum. The asylum shots will have various way of showing a mental state but not reveling the idnentiy of the girl. The finale of the trailer is in the park, which is where vairous things happen and there are 4 final shot panning around a band stand, shooting a close up on the faces of all four girls.

Research and palnning: magazine drafts x2

This is a first draft of my film magazine cover. I changed the name of my magazine from rewind to uncut. I used a close up shot for the focus image to make the whole face fill the frame. I included indication of cover lines, the barcode, the price, masthead and slug line.

This is a draft of my magazine cover. This is a second idea and less refined than the first because i think the first draft will be more succsessful. I included a mid shot of a female character, using the same hairstyle and makeup as on the first draft. There will also be a Masthead, slug line, price, barcode, and cover lines on my magazine cover.

research and planning: meeting post

Today me and my partner discussed the name of our film and our production company name

Film name: The Grim Truth or Grim Truth

Production company name: After Life

Slug line: keep your friends close

research and planning: Tag line research

These are ideas for my horror film tag line. These tag lines will be shown on the trailer, poster and magazine, and the designs i have produced will probably look less graphical when on my magazine. I prefer the second tag line because i think it relates better to the plot of out trailer and works well for our genre of trailer.

Research and planning: film magazine anaylsis 2

This a magazine cover of Empire magazine with main focus film being 'The girl with the dragon tattoo'. The genre of the magazine focuses completely on films and uses conventions like a masthead, a slug line, cover lines, a barcode, issue number and pricing to show this.

The genre of this cover related to the film show, and has a clear element of horror. The representation of the cover shows two character from the film, suggesting that these characters are and equal focus of the film. The colours and clothing they are wearing are all black showing a dark theme to the film. The colour theme for this cover shows use of many colours including, blue, red, pink, yellow and white, which doesn't conform to the usual three colour magazines usually use. The main colours of this cover in my opinion are black and blue, this is because the costumes are black and the background is very dark with elements of black, and with a slight blue tint. This is relevant in showing the genre of film to be very dark showing the genre being a horror/action. The cover line which is the most noticeable and of main focus in apparent due to the larger size, the bold font and the white colouring. This applies to the typical conventions of magazines, making the cover photography known with a bold cover line. The age this cover attracts i think is a 12A, because there is no explicit content, and no indication from the cover that there is anything inappropriate for certain ages. The actual film was rated with an age 18 certificate, meaning the film is more relevant to an older audience than the magazine story. My own magazine cover will be relevant to aged 12, although the actual film will be rated at 15, this is because images are less inappropriate in comparison to film.

Research and planning: film magazine anaylsis 1

This a magazine cover of Empire magazine with main focus film being 'The dark knight'. The genre of the magazine focuses on films and uses conventions like a masthead, a slug line, cover lines, a barcode, issue number and pricing to show this.

The genre of this cover in particular is 'The dark knight', and because the character on the front (the joker) typically wears a green waist coat in the films, green has been used in the three colour scheme. The three colour rule consists of lime green, black and white, and shows the darkness this horror films genre intends. Representation on this cover shows a middle aged man looking strangely in our direction, showing that this character will evidently be an evil character. The age this appeals to would be age 12A because there is no images of violence, or anything inappropriate, which is what the film itself was certificated. The shot type used in a close up, focusing completely on the characters face and the evil stare which is shown, this magazine is relevant to the film theme i am creating, as they match the conventions of a horror/thriller genre.

research and planning: villan research

These are some villans relevent to my horror film genre. They are all children because for my trailer the characters are all teens, and although my protagantist will be less obvious there will still be elements simular to the characters above.

research and planning: film poster analysis

Analyse x1-
This film poster is for a film called 'Friday The 13th, a thriller/ horror film, which is apparent by the looks of this poster. A long shot has been chosen to show the entire profile of the protagonist, and from this shot we see that he is the main focus character. The darkness and amount of black and dark blue colours suggest a horror film genre, also the character looks creepy, holding a weapon whilst wearing a mask. From the photograph and the film title there is a narrative suggesting that Friday the 13th will be an eventful time, due to the focus character. The audience of this film is targeted at age 18, therefor our trailer and poster will be less scary than of this film, and will target more 15 years old. The mise-en-scene is in a woods and again shows that the genre is relevant to a horror/thriller film. You can easily show that this is a Film poster because of the Steel tongs font at the bottom including the production company logo and cast members.

Analysis 2-
This film poster is for a film called 'The Strangers' a thriller relating to my genre of film. A long shot had been chosen for this poster to show the house environment and to show the possible main character, with a mysterious protagonist lurking in the dark part of the room. The theme of the poster and the stalker vibe from it suggests a horror/thriller genre which will relate to the theme and genre for when i create my film poster. The narrative of this poster suggests a feeling of stalking and being watched, and an invasion of the girl characters home, other than than the poster doesn't give to much away considering the plot. The audience this film appeals to is age 15, like the trailer i am creating, this is suitable for this age group because it looks scary, but not gruesome and and as dark as other film posters. The mise-en-scene of this trailer is quite normal, showing a room which looks quite homely but with a brown musky tint. The effect on the poster has whats called 'Burnt Edges' were the outside of a image is black and makes the poster look darker and more relevant to the genre. The steel tongs font has been used to show that this is a film poster, with information which includes the production company names and the cast members.
